About the Role:
This is a part-time Of Counsel position for an experienced New York probate attorney who is ready to hit the ground running. Approximately 8-16 hours per week to start. Flexibility for W-2 or 1099 depending on location and availability. We have an established and growing probate practice with a steady stream of new matters.

You will manage uncontested probate and estate administration matters from initial client consultation through final resolution while being supported by an experienced administrative team. Your responsibilities will include legal analysis, strategy, client counseling, preparation and review of court filings, oversight of support staff, and representation throughout the administration process.

This position requires someone who enjoys working collaboratively with both clients and teammates and who values excellence, efficiency, and continuous improvement.

This isn't a litigation role:
Your primary responsibility will be helping clients through one of the most difficult times in their lives. You'll meet with prospective and existing clients, uncover their concerns, educate them about their options, and empower them to move forward with a strategy that simplifies things for them and winds things up in an efficient manner.

Responsibilities:
  • Meet with clients to evaluate probate and estate administration matters.
  • Analyze legal issues and develop appropriate strategies.
  • Handle uncontested probate proceedings, administration proceedings, ancillary probate proceedings, and other Surrogate's Court matters from beginning to end.
  • Prepare and review petitions, pleadings, affidavits, accountings, and related court documents.
  • Supervise probate legal assistants and paralegals to ensure high-quality work and efficient case progression.
  • Collaborate with the estate planning attorneys regarding legal strategy and best practices.
  • Maintain proactive communication with clients throughout their matters.
  • Ensure matters move efficiently while maintaining exceptional client service.
  • Identify opportunities to improve processes and client experience.
  • Trust administration experience a plus.

Qualifications.
Required:
  • Member in good standing of the New York State Bar.
  • Minimum three (3) years of substantial experience independently handling New York probate and estate administration matters.
  • Demonstrated experience with:
    • Probate proceedings.
    • Administration proceedings.
    • Small estate proceedings.
    • Ancillary probate proceedings.
    • Trust administration.
  • Ability to independently manage matters with minimal supervision.
  • Strong legal writing, analytical, and organizational skills.
  • Excellent client communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Ability to collaborate effectively with attorneys, paralegals, and administrative staff.
  • Highly organized with exceptional attention to detail.
  • Proactive, dependable, and accountable.
  • Comfortable learning and using legal technology.

Preferred:
  • Estate planning experience.
  • Elder law experience.
  • Trust administration.
  • Estate Tax experience.
  • Experience working in a paper-light or technology-driven law practice.

Technology Requirements: You should be proficient in or able to quickly learn.

Schedule: This is a part-time position.
  • Client meetings will generally take place at our Chatham or Albany, New York office 2 days per week.
  • Remaining work may be performed remotely.
  • Our normal business hours are Monday through Friday.
  • Occasional evening or Saturday client meetings are a plus but not required.
